What is the Summer Solstice?
The summer solstice marks the moment when the Earth’s north pole tilts closest to the sun, giving us the longest day and shortest night of the year.
This turning point has been celebrated in many ways across cultures — often symbolizing growth, transformation, gratitude, and new beginnings.
You may hear what the solstice “should” inspire — energy, expansion, action — but remember: the most important thing is to listen to where you are. Maybe you’re feeling bold and ready to move forward, or maybe you need stillness and reflection. Either way, the light is here — and it’s yours to receive in whatever way you need.
Go on a Welcome Walk
As you stroll, use the Welcome Walk Worksheet to encourage your kids to observe their surroundings. Celebrate the beauty of summer by noticing the colorful trees, birds chirping or the damp, morning air.
Create a floral crown
Choose greenery from your yard and weave it together to create a simple flower crown you can give back to nature when the day is through. Use flowers, nature treasures even herbs from your garden (or fridge!)
Make a Solstice Nature Craft
We love making suncatchers and it's really so simple when you use clear packing tape and nature treasures gathered from the yard. You can cut a piece of construction paper into a shape if you wish or simply stick nature treasures to tape and hang in your window! Be inspired by Tinkergarten.
Enjoy a Solstice Storytime
We love these backyard explorer books, and many are perfect for summer like Discovering Plants and Flowers, Beach Walk and a new one we can't wait to try Spotting Snakes and Frogs, and Other Reptiles and Amphibians (but honestly, no snakes for me please.) The Solstice Badger, and Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer are other great finds.
Seasonal bbq
Visit a local farmers market to celebrate and gather items for a bbq at home or picnic in a local greenspace! Items can be seasonal or maybe a fun theme like the colors of the sun to celebrate the most daylight we will have all year!
Light a Solstice flame
As a family, light a candle in the evening to symbolize the growing light and share what each of you hopes for in the season or, if you able to safely, have your first campfire of the season and celebrate with smores! Fire can be a symbol of renewal, transformation and inspiration.
Free Welcome Walk Worksheet
To make your solstice celebration extra special, I’ve created a Welcome Walk Worksheet to help guide your kids through a mindful nature walk. This printable worksheet encourages them to:
Notice what they see, hear, and feel in their surroundings.
Reflect on the beauty of summer and their wishes for the season.
Learn about the changes happening in nature during this time of year.
Why Celebrate the summer Solstice with Kids?
The solstice offers a moment to pause, connect with nature, and embrace traditions that nurture mindfulness and joy. By involving your kids in simple activities like walks, crafts, and storytelling, you’re helping them develop an appreciation for the seasons and the world around them.
How will you celebrate the summer solstice this year?
